You may feel that sense of dread about the end of great trekking weather creeping up inside you like fog gradually covering mountaintops when the temperature drops.
And although you know that you still can go hiking even during the colder months of the year, you can’t help but find your hiking plans freezing in the chilly weather. Then you wonder how you can snap out of this winter paralysis and keep yourself motivated enough to go out and hike.
Recreate Hike Season Conditions
The chilly weather may make you feel lethargic and make getting out of bed rather more difficult than usual. Avoid this rut by setting your heater thermostat to the level that recreates that of the less colder months of the year. When your home is toasty, your body tends to forget it’s actually winter.
Also, see to it that your indoor haven is bright or has lighting that somehow is similar to real daylight. You can put a lamp next to your bed that gives you that daylight illumination gradually, for example. You can also furnish your place with warm, happy colors to recall spring, summer, or autumn. Set up avocado green curtains or use terracotta sofa and throw pillow covers, for example.
Doing these things can help keep your mood afloat through the dreary season and can help keep your zest for the outdoors from flagging.
Keep Getting Exposed to Inspiration
Reading about hiking experiences of mountaineering icons never fails to fire up the urge to trek, so make sure you have a climbing-themed book lying around and within reach. Or you can read interviews of modern-day mountaineering heroes or watch video clips of mountainscapes.
You can also subscribe to social media accounts specializing in outdoor sceneries to preserve your appreciation for nature and the outdoors. Joining a hiking forum or trek-centric chats also helps, as well as meet ups with fellow trekkers in your area.
If you consider yourself already fit, maintain it with workouts that you can do even in the comforts of your own home. Do cardio-based and strengthening workouts to prepare you for your next adventure, making winter a rather productive period that will only fire you up for hiking season. It can also get you worked up enough to try winter walking, if you haven’t done that yet, or prepare you sufficiently for a spot of winter hiking.

This way, you’ll meet new friends and take on new adventures which will only add to your appreciation for the great outdoors.
